Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ahmadu Giade, has disclosed that the couple allegedly caught with 4.050kg of cocaine will be charged for child abuse for using their innocent six-year-old twins in smuggling cocaine.
Last week, officials of the agency have apprehended a 46-year-old man Jimoh Oladega Bashir, his wife, Jimoh Mulikat Adebukola and six-year-old twins for trafficking 4.050 kg of cocaine.
The family of four was to board an Arik flight to London Heathrow airport on Sunday March 28, 2010 when they were found with the illicit white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine. Giade described the action of the couple as an abuse of the children’s rights, which would not be condoned.
The 46-year-old father, Jimoh Oladega Bashir was alleged to have connived with his wife, Jimoh Mulikat Adebukola in concealing 350 grammes of cocaine each on the diaper of their six-year-old twins while travelling to London.
According to the NDLEA boss, “the action of the couple is callous, morally depraved and unacceptable. Apart from charging them on the grounds of drug trafficking, they will also be charged with child abuse. It is unlawful for them to take advantage of the kid’s innocence in involving them in a serious criminal act of drug trafficking. No society will overlook such act of debasement” Giade warned.
The innocent 6 years old twins were caught with 700 grammes of the illicit drugs which brought the total quantity of cocaine to 4.050kg.
The NDLEA Airport Commander, Alhaji Hamza Umar said investigation into the case is at advanced stage and that other accomplices shall be made to face the wrath of the law.
“The case is under investigation and we have made significant progress. All the people involved shall be brought to book” Hamza assured.
He also described the couple as greedy; otherwise if they were contented it would be difficult for them to yield to such criminal temptation.
The agency expressed surprise at the action of the couple saying that even with a supermarket at Ajah, Lagos to earn a living the couple still engaged in such illicit act. Jimo explained that the reason he and the rest of his family indulged in the unlawful act was that he was duped the sum of 2.2 million naira and needed to smuggle the drugs to enable them pay the school fees of their children.
According to Jimoh, “We were to be paid 3,000 pounds while some quantity of the drugs would have been given to us. Initially I rejected the suggestion but they convinced my wife who persuaded me to do it. My son is at Fountain University Osogbo and I need to pay school fees”.
The wife also blamed their involvement on school fees and other family financial responsibility.
She said, “I have problem of my children school fees. I have six children and I intend to give them good education. I also have younger ones and aged parents to take care of. They asked me to swallow the drugs but I was afraid that was while I packed them in my body”.
Jimoh hails from Oko town in Kwara State. The children had been released to the family members but the couple will soon be charged to court.
